Wake Forest Pickleball Club – the history

It’s 2004; residents from the Heritage subdivision in Wake Forest form a golf group that came to be called the Legends. They played golf on Monday’s, Wednesday’s, and Friday’s. Over time the question became, what can we do on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s?

In 2009, Heritage resident Jerry McInnes visited the pickleball mecca of The Village’s in Florida. He had heard of pickleball and played a little, but wasn’t very good . . . yet. Coming back to play in Wake Forest, he found nothing so he started asking around and showing his friends the game.

In 2011, a small group of his golf buddies began regular pickleball play on the Heritage tennis courts, first on chalk-lined courts; then on tape-lined courts. Today there are four painted pickleball courts enjoyed by the residents of Heritage using portable nets funded by Orthopedic Physical Therapy.

Driven by USAPA Ambassador Joe Vartanesian, expansion to the Wake Forest Flaherty Park Community Center was achieved in the spring of 2013 with indoor play on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Play continued indoors into the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014. As the fun of the sport got out, play time demands grew. Information was exchanged with Town officials that demonstrated the growth and value of pickleball.

In July 2014, the Town of Wake Forest Parks and Recreation Department funded the painting of eight pickleball courts during the court resurfacing at the outdoor tennis complex in Flaherty Park. The department also funded additional pickleball nets, paddles and balls for use during outdoor play.

Demand has continued to grow with pickleball clinics being held and increased playing time during the fall and winter season at Flaherty Park Community Center. Today there are more than 200 Wake Forest pickleball players in lime green shirts playing in the Raleigh metro area, and in tournaments throughout North and South Carolina, and as far away as Ohio and Florida. Club members have taken numerous medals in singles and doubles competitions at local and state levels. A few have even qualified for national competitions.

Come out and enjoy the really fun sport of pickleball with the Wake Forest Pickleball Club. See you on the courts!
